BRUSSELS, (PIC)
The European Union (EU) affirmed that it will not recognize the changes made by the Israeli occupation authorities to the borders of 1967.
In a press statement on Friday, the EU said that “there is a strong consensus in the international community that the only sustainable solution that will achieve peace and security in the Middle East is the two-state solution.”
The EU statement came a day after the Israeli Knesset (parliament) passed a decision opposing the establishment of a Palestinian state, even if it were part of a negotiated settlement.
The Knesset considered the establishment of any Palestinian state in the aftermath of the events of October 7, 2023 as “a reward for terrorism” and an existential threat to Israel.
The EU statement reiterated its firm commitment to a just and lasting peace in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, including Resolutions 2735, 2728, 2720, and 2712, on the basis of the two-state solution.
The statement explained that the Union will continue to work actively with international and regional partners to revive the political process to achieve this goal, noting that the lack of hope or horizon for the Palestinian people will deepen the conflict.
The Israeli occupation army has been waging a war of extermination on the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023, which has so far resulted in 38,848 martyrs, 89,459 injured, mostly women and children, the displacement of about 1.9 million people, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction of the health and educational infrastructure and famine that has claimed the lives of dozens of children, according to UN and local data.
