Rafah Municipality in the southern Gaza Strip said that the Israeli occupation army’s destruction of the main water tank exacerbates the crisis the city is already suffering from, in light of the lack of capabilities to build alternative reservoirs or spare parts to repair what was destroyed.

Last Saturday, an Israeli soldier of the 401st Brigade posted a video on social media showing the explosion of the water tank, with the comment: “Destruction of the Tal al-Sultan water tank, in honor of Saturday.”

The mayor of Rafah, Dr. Ahmed al-Sufi, considered the Israeli occupation army’s blowing up of the main water reservoir known as the “Canada Well” in the Tal al-Sultan neighborhood, west of the city, a crime against humanity and an escalation of the Israeli policy of collective punishment and genocide.

Al-Sufi explained, in a press statement on Monday, that the Canada water tank supplies Rafah’s water network with 3,000 cubic meters per day and is operating at an operational capacity of 180 m3/hour.

He said that the Israeli occupation soldiers’ boasting about blowing up the well “reveals the truth of their goals of destroying the necessities of life and their disregard for international laws.”

Al-Sufi explained that the total cost of constructing the Canada Water Reservoir is estimated at about $1.7m.

Since the beginning of Israel’s war of genocide on the Gaza Strip, many videos have spread showing Israeli occupation army soldiers committing violations in the Strip, sparking criticism around the world.
