A number of countries have condemned Israel’s assassination of Ismail Haneyya, head of Hamas’s political bureau, in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Wednesday.

Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said that “Haneyya’s blood will not go in vain, adding that his “martyrdom in Tehran will strengthen and deepen Tehran’s close ties with Palestine and the resistance.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council held in the morning an emergency meeting at Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s residence in the presence of senior Revolutionary Guard commanders to discuss the strike that killed Haneyya and decide the appropriate response to the assassination operation in Tehran.

For its part, the Russian foreign ministry condemned Haneyya’s assassination as an “absolutely unacceptable political murder.”

“This is an absolutely unacceptable political murder, and it will lead to further escalation of tensions,” the state news agency, RIA, cited deputy foreign minister Mikhail Bogdanov as saying.

Bogdanov warned that this assassination incident would also have a negative impact on the ceasefire talks over Gaza.

Türkiye also condemned the “heinous” assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haneyya in Iran.

“This assassination aims to spread the war in Gaza to a regional level,” Türkiye’s foreign minister warned. “Unless the international community moves to stop Israel, our region will face much larger conflicts.”

Yemen’s Ansarullah group, for its part, mourned Haneyya, describing his assassination as a “heinous terrorist crime,” and a “flagrant violation of the international law.”

The Hamas Movement announced early Wednesday that its political leader Ismail Haneyya was assassinated in an Israeli airstrike on his residence in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

Iran’s state television also reported Haneyya’s martyrdom, noting that an investigation into the assassination is ongoing and that the results will be announced soon.
