The Hamas Movement has strongly denounced remarks made on Monday morning by far-right Israeli security minister Itamar Ben Gvir about his intent to build a synagogue for Jewish settlers inside the Aqsa Mosque compound in Occupied Jerusalem.

In a statement, Hamas described his remarks in this regard as “dangerous” and a “reflection of the nature of the Israeli government’s tendencies towards the Aqsa Mosque and its Islamic and Arab identity.”

Hamas accused the Israeli government of giving a free hand to its extremist ministers to carry out their malicious plots against Jerusalem and the Aqsa Mosque, warning that such a policy would add fuel to the flames and would be met with more resistance from the Palestinian people.

Hamas urged the Palestinian masses in the West Bank and 1948 occupied Palestine to take to the streets in support of the Aqsa Mosque and march en masse to the holy city to stand in the face of the Israeli schemes targeting the holy site.

The Movement also called on the Palestinian young men in the West Bank to escalate their clashes with the Israeli occupation forces and extremist settlers.

Ben Gvir claimed Monday that Jews have the right to pray at the Aqsa Mosque, saying that he would build a synagogue at the flashpoint site.

It was the first time for Ben Gvir to openly speak about building a synagogue inside the Aqsa Mosque compound. However, he has repeatedly called in recent months for allowing Jewish prayers at the site.

His call came amid persistent and growing break-ins into the compound by extremist Jewish settlers under police protection.
