The Hamas Movement has condemned the abuse of Palestinian prisoners in Israel’s Megiddo jail, saying their exposure to ill-treatment and humiliation reflects the “enormity of hatred and sadism” Israeli jailers have towards the prisoners.
Video footage recently leaked from Megiddo prison has showed Israeli forces abusing and terrorizing prisoners with police dogs.
Such crimes against the Palestinian prisoners are part of Israel’s “brutal practices” against them that include torture, starvation and medical neglect, Hamas charged.
“The number of the prisoners who have been martyred due to medical neglect and torture in Israeli jails has exceeded 60 martyrs,” Hamas pointed out.
The Movement urged international human rights groups and the Red Cross to document such “horrific crimes and practices” against the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and take immediate action to put an end to the blatant violation of the international law that takes place in Israeli jails.
For its part, the ministry of detainees and ex-detainees has described the recent footage from inside Megiddo jail as a “small part of the ugly and bleak reality in Israeli jails.”
“The occupation government has turned its jails, under the supervision of far-right minister Ben Gvir, into killing and torture chambers,” the ministry said.
The ministry called on human rights groups and the Red Cross to have an effective role in putting an end to Israel’s violations in prisons and to visit the Palestinian prisoners.
