More than 50 UN member countries have asked the General Assembly and the Security Council to impose an arms embargo on Israel.
In a memo to the UNGA and UNSC and to Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Monday evening, the 50 countries led by Türkiye charged Israel with violating international laws in Gaza, other Palestinian lands, Lebanon and other areas in the Middle East.
The memo said that the alarming number of civilian casualties, mostly children and women, as a result of Israel’s continuous violations of international laws cannot be accepted nor tolerated.
It added, “We have to urgently act to end the unbearable humanitarian suffering and the regional instability that threatens the eruption of an all-out war.”
The memo asked the UNSC to declare an immediate ceasefire to avert such a catastrophe, adopt measures to protect civilians, and ensure accountability.
Turkish diplomatic sources told Anadolu Ajansı that Ankara had launched an initiative within the UN to impose an arms and ammunition embargo on Israel and that 52 countries had joined the initiative in addition to the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Conference.
Israel has been launching a devastating war on the Gaza Strip since October 7 last year with unlimited American support, killing and injuring 145,000 citizens, other than inflicting vast destruction to infrastructure and unprecedented manmade famine.
