Lawyer Ghaid Qassem demanded an urgent halt to the assaults and violations suffered by the Palestinian prisoner, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, in Israeli prisons, after her last visit.

In her statements to Al Jazeera Mubasher, Ghaid exposed the inhumane conditions and torture that Abu Safiya has been facing in Israeli occupation prisons since he attended the last session of his trial on March 25.

The lawyer said Abu Safiyeh was subjected to severe assaults and beatings, especially after the day of his last trial, when he was labeled in court as an unlawful combatant.

“On April 6, Abu Safiya was subjected to another assault, in which his head was hit to an iron pole inside the prison, causing an injury to his forehead,” she said.

Ghaid explained that Abu Safiya is subjected to the same ill-treatment faced by Gaza Strip detainees held in occupation prisons, including “starvation, torture, abuse, ill-treatment, and lack of minimum health care,” adding that “poor medical care is beyond description.”

“Ofer prison sections, Section 23 and Section 24, which contain detainees from the Gaza Strip, were stormed, and the prisoners were brutally assaulted, their hands and feet were tied, their faces were stomped on by special units and gas bombs were thrown at them,” she added.

“In the cold winter, mattresses and blankets were confiscated, forcing the prisoners to sleep on the floor,” the lawyer elaborated.

She added that many prisoners have lost tens of kilograms of weight, while many others suffer from skin infectious diseases.
