The Gaza Municipality announced on Monday evening that the Israeli Mekorot water line does not suffice to meet the needs of all the city’s neighborhoods, in light of the destruction of the central desalination plant and a number of wells and water tanks.
In a press statement, the municipality explained that large areas in the north and southwest of the city suffer from a severe water shortage, stressing that the greatest shortage levels are seen in the western neighborhoods as a result of severe damage to the infrastructure due to the ongoing Israeli aggression.
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) and the Water Authority, more than 85 percent of the water and sanitation facilities and assets in the Gaza Strip have been completely or partially disrupted due to the ongoing Israeli offensive.
The networks were gravely damaged, with 1,545 kilometers of them completely destroyed and 8.6 kilometers partially destroyed. 47 wastewater pumping stations were also destroyed, of which 20 were completely destroyed and 27 partially destroyed.
The water crisis in Gaza is not new. It has been escalating catastrophically due to the Israeli relentless bombardment, which caused widespread destruction of infrastructure and vital facilities, making securing clean water a daily challenge and an ongoing struggle for many families.
