Saturday 25-September-2010

RAMALLAH (PIC)– The Palestinian-Iraqi League said forces from the Iraqi interior ministry known as the “commandos” arrested several Palestinian refugees in one of the largest Palestinian communities in the country.

The commandos raided Friday evening a Palestinian municipal complex in central Baghdad and arrested 25 refugees after beating and humiliating them the league said in a statement Saturday adding that no justification was given for the arrests.

A bomb targeting surrounding areas of the community went off moments before the raid the league added.

Iraqi authorities released a number of the detainees but others were still in custody the league went on to say.

Before the U.S. occupation 23300 Palestinian refugees lived in Iraq according to statistics of the High Commissioner for Refugees but the number has since fallen to around 10000.

Palestinian refugees have been victimized by extensive campaigns after the U.S. war against Iraq in 2003 and have been targeted by militias while many have been arrested threatened and killed.
