3 Palestinians on hunger strike in Israeli jail

Sunday 29-October-2017

Three Palestinian detainees have been on an open-ended hunger strike to protest arbitrary detention in Israeli jails the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) reported on Sunday.

Palestinian prisoner Hasan Shawka 29 has been on an open ended hunger strike for 19 days running to protest administrative detention with neither charge nor trial.

The Ofer court transferred the detainee to an isolated cell to force him to suspend the hunger strike. He has been only drinking water and refusing to undergo medical checks.

Prisoner Shawka was arrested by the Israeli forces on August 28 one month after he was released from Israeli jails and was sentenced to a six-month administrative term.

27-year-old Hamza Bouziya has also been on an open ended hunger strike for 13 days running in Nafha jail. He has spent a total of nearly eight years in Israeli lock-ups.

At the same time 32-year-old Bilal Diab from Jenin has been on a hunger strike for 12 consecutive days in protest at his administrative detention. He has been enduring dire detention conditions in an isolated cell in the Ashkelon prison.

In 2012 Diab had gone through a 78-day- hunger strike. He was re-arrested by the Israeli forces on July 14 and sentenced administratively.
