40 Palestinian prisoners are currently held in solitary confinement the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) revealed.
In a statement on Monday the PPS said the number of the isolated prisoners in Israeli jails rose to 40 the highest number in 10 years.
Muhammad Gibran Khalil 39 is the longest serving prisoner in isolation. He spent more than 15 years in solitary confinement.
According to the PPS most of the inmates in the isolation cells suffer from severe psychological conditions. The Society believes that putting a prisoner in solitary confinement is the most dangerous tool of torture.
A major demand of Palestinian prisoners’ mass hunger strike in April 2017 was for Israel to end its policy of long-term isolation for “security” reasons. Although rules exist under Israeli and international law to closely govern the use of solitary confinement and isolation both measures are often used impermissibly and at great cost to Palestinian prisoners and detainees.
