50 Palestinian refugees on Iraqi-Syrian border suffer suffocation in sandstorm

Tuesday 24-April-2007

BAGHDAD (PIC)– Palestinian refugees in Iraq who fled persecution in that country and were stranded at makeshift camps on the Syrian borders on Monday suffered from a sandstorm that smothered 50 of them.

The refugees trapped on the borders after neighboring Arab countries denied them access sent an urgent message to the Arab leaders on Tuesday appealing to them to end the suffering of their families.

They said that a number of tents were destroyed in the storm while a man was injured in his head in the Walid camp when a door fell on his head while the Tanaf camp ran out of oxygen cylinders used to treat asthma patients.

The refugees asked for their quick transfer from those crude camps adding “The question does not need summits or meetings but rather a sense of responsibility towards those who are dying on daily basis”.
