A group of Jewish settlers backed by Israeli police forced their way into occupied Jerusalem’s al-Aqsa Mosque compound on Monday morning.
About 52 settlers stormed the al-Aqsa complex through al-Magharbeh Gate under Israeli police protection Quds Press reported.
Two army officers also broke into the holy shrine and conducted a provocative tour the agency added.
Over the past few weeks more than 2000 settlers – always accompanied by Israeli security forces – broke into the Al-Aqsa complex. The frequent violations anger Palestinian Muslims and occasionally lead to violent confrontations.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 war. It later annexed the holy city in 1980 – in a move never recognized by the international community – claiming it as the capital of the self-proclaimed Jewish state.
