Abbas: Ending Israeli occupation key to peace

Friday 15-July-2022

“The key to peace in the region begins with ending the Israeli occupation of our land” the Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said following his meeting with US President Joe Biden on Friday in Bethlehem.

“I am willing to extend an open hand to Israeli leaders to bring peace to the region” Abbas underlined warning that the opportunity for a two-state solution on the 1967 borders may be available today but might not remain for a long time.

Abbas called on the US to hold accountable the killers of Shireen Abu Akleh (the Al Jazeera correspondent) who was assassinated on the 11th of May while covering an Israeli raid on Jenin.

He also called for ending the Jewish settlers’ attacks and the racial discrimination policy practiced against Palestinian civilians.

For his part US President Joe Biden said that the goal of a two-state solution appeared far off due to restrictions imposed on the Palestinian people.

Biden added that even if the ground is not right at this moment to restart negotiations the United States would not give up on the goal of a two-state solution.
