Abbas-Olmert meeting concludes without official statements

Sunday 24-December-2006

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM (PIC)– No statements were made or released after PA chief Mahmoud Abbas met with Israeli premier Ehud Olmert in occupied Jerusalem for two hours at a late hour Saturday.

Former PA premier Ahmed Qrei and head of the PLO’s negotiations department Sa’eb Uraikat attended the meeting.

Hebrew media said that Olmert agreed to lift a number of roadblocks from the West Bank and to release 100 million dollars of frozen PA money on condition they would not be channeled to or through the Hamas-led PA government.

The measures which aimed at bolstering Abbas’ position in face of the growing popularity of Hamas in the Palestinian arena also included facilitating passage of trucks via Karni crossing into the Gaza Strip and allowing Egyptian arms supplies to Palestinian security forces loyal to Abbas in addition to redeploying the Badr force currently stationed in Jordan in PA-run lands.

Uraikat told a press conference that Olmert approved releasing the 100 million dollars for humanitarian reasons!

Olmert however asked Abbas to restrain the firing of missiles from the Gaza Strip at Israeli targets while Abbas asked for including the West Bank in the truce.

Abbas has refused to meet his premier Ismail Haneyya to solve numerous pending problems in the Palestinian arena.
