Abbas renews insistence on talks with IOA

Tuesday 24-February-2009

PRAGUE (PIC)– Mahmoud Abbas the former PA chief and Fatah leader has declared his insistence on maintaining negotiations with the Israeli occupation authority despite results of the latest Israeli general elections.

Abbas speaking to the media in Prague after meeting with the current president of the European Union Czech President Vaclav Klaus on Monday said that the talks should not return to point zero with every change in the Israeli government.

He expressed appreciation for what he called the Czech “balanced position” towards the “Palestinian-Israeli” conflict. The Czech position however is clearly biased in favor of Israel.

For his part Klaus said that his country in its capacity as the current chairman of the EU was ready to push forward the Middle East peace process.

Leader of the right-wing Likud party Benjamin Netanyahu who was assigned by Israeli president Shimon Peres to form the new government had ruled out the establishment of a Palestinian state.

He promised the far right national union party that the broad lines of his coalition would not mention a Palestinian state roadmap plan or the Annapolis conference.
