The presidency of al-Azhar Mosque and University has applauded the steps that were taken by the Palestinians to achieve the national reconciliation and culminated with the coming of the Palestinian government to the Gaza Strip to assume its responsibilities.

In a press release on Monday al-Azhar presidency affirmed its support for the Palestinian people’s struggle for the liberation of their occupied land and the establishment of their state with its capital in Jerusalem.

It also urged all Palestinians to uphold their national unity renounce all causes of division and dispute and give priority to their higher national interests.

For his part secretary-general of the Arab League Ahmed Abul-Gheit also welcomed the positive developments that happened with regard to the Palestinian reconciliation and the presence of the Palestinian government in Gaza.

According to a spokesman for the Arab League Abul-Gheit voiced hope that the Palestinians from all political spectra would seize the current opportunity to engage in a genuine reconciliation in order to alleviate the humanitarian suffering of the citizens in the occupied territories especially in Gaza.

Abul-Gheit also called the Palestinian reconciliation a necessary step to strengthen the Palestinian position in the face of Israel which uses the division as an excuse to evade its obligations towards a final settlement with the Palestinians.
