Amnesty: No deal changes Israel’s legal duties as an occupying power

Saturday 12-September-2020

Amnesty International has emphasized that any process aimed at a just and lasting peace in the occupied Palestinian territories must include the removal of illegal Israeli settlements in comments made after the Bahrain-Israel normalization of ties.

The rights group said all systematic violations of human rights must come to an end while justice and compensation must be delivered to victims of crimes as per international law.

No diplomatic agreement “can change the legal duties of Israel as an occupying power in according with international humanitarian law and international human rights law nor deprive the Palestinians of their rights and protections guaranteed by international law” Amnesty underlined in a statement published on Twitter.

Amnesty’s remarks came just a few moments after Bahrain announced it would follow the steps of the United Arab Emirates in normalizing ties with the occupation state.

US president Donald Trump announced the agreement on Friday following a three-way phone call he had with Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu and Bahrain’s King Hamad Al Khalifa. The three leaders also issued a brief joint statement confirming the deal.
