Ankara: Jerusalem red line

Sunday 6-May-2018

Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdağ on Saturday said that Jerusalem is a red line for the Muslim world.

This was voiced during a speech he delivered during the 45th session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka.

Bozdağ said that the Istanbul Islamic summit held in 2017 emphasized the need to protect Jerusalem’s history and legal status as the capital of Palestine.

The Turkish official called for unified efforts by Islamic countries to defend Jerusalem and the legitimate Palestinian rights.

On 13th December 2017 Istanbul hosted an emergency OIC summit on Jerusalem under the chairmanship of Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with the participation of 16 leaders as well as delegations from the member states.

The summit was concluded by a 23-item statement that called on the world to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine in response to the US president Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move his country’s embassy there to the holy city.
