Another ancient cemetery uncovered in Gaza

Tuesday 28-June-2022

The ministry of tourism and antiquities in the Gaza Strip has announced the discovery of another ancient Roman cemetery dating back 2000 years in the besieged Gaza Strip.

In a statement on Monday undersecretary of the ministry Mohamed Khallah said a 2000-year-old Roman cemetery containing several graves were uncovered near the shoreline in the north of the Gaza City.

Khallah explained that this cemetery may contain the remains of some residents of the area which was the historic Balakhiya Port during the Roman era.

According to him some graves are ornately decorated and seem to belong to senior ranking people in the Roman Empire.

He said that the ministry of tourism and antiquities seeks to obtain funding to protect and study this cemetery and identify its historical value.

A few months ago the ministry announced the discovery of a similar Roman cemetery in Beit Lahia in northern Gaza. The burial site was found by a construction crew working on an Egyptian-funded housing project in that area.
