Arab Knesset members foil early voting on outlawing Islamic Movement

Wednesday 14-March-2007

NAZARETH (PIC)– The Likud member of the Israeli Knesset (parliament) Yisrael Katz failed on Wednesday in winning an early voting on his draft law outlawing the Islamic Movement in the 1948 lands.

Arab parliamentary sources said that when the issue of tabling the request at the Knesset without waiting for the 45 days legal period was put to vote the Arab members walked out of the session thus impairing a quorum.

Chairperson of the parliamentary committee called off the meeting when the Arab deputies along with leftist members walked out of the second session. When the same thing happened in the third session the whole issue was called off.

MP Mohammed Baraka said that the “battle” was not over adding that the law would be tabled with the Knesset at completion of the legal period. He warned that a number of MPs who are members in the ruling coalition government supported the law despite being contrary to the simplest rules of democracy.

MP Ahmed Tibi said that the opposition worked hard to foil the presence of 9 deputies in the parliamentary committee so as to abort the quorum.
