Barghouti raises doubts over Israel’s willingness to achieve peace in the region

Thursday 19-April-2007

RAMALLAH (PIC)– PA information minister Dr. Mustafa Al-Barghouthi has raised doubts over Israel’s sincerity in achieving peace and stability in the region charging the Hebrew state of evading peace obligations.

He said that Israel has no more excuses to evade peace obligations after Arab countries extended their hand for peace in the region.

“I really doubt Israel’s willingness to positively deal with the Arab peace initiative because there is no real Israeli partner for peace in the Israeli occupation government” Barghouthi underlined.

Furthermore the PA minister accused Israel of dodging and intentionally delaying negotiations of final status and of conspiring to exchange establishing an independent Palestinian state with a weak autonomy without sovereignty.

“The Arab peace initiative has indeed put the ball in the Israeli court as Israel can’t anymore evade peace obligations in the region or take vague stands on it” Barghouthi pointed out.

He also hailed the Arab League’s emphasis on a number of conditions before negotiating the plan with Israel including immediate rescinding of the unjust economic blockade on the Palestinian people and halting construction of the apartheid separation wall among other conditions.

In addition Barghouthi described the AL call on the Israeli occupation government to stop aggressions on the unarmed Palestinian people and to hold an international conference to serve as a reference for any peace process in the region as “correct introduction to implement the initiative”.

He also explained that the PA presidency and government are striving hard to explain the Palestinian stand and to rally the international community into breaking the 15-month-old economic siege on the Palestinian people.
