Biden visits Bethlehem meets Abbas

Friday 15-July-2022

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met US President Joe Biden in Bethlehem on Friday morning.

The two presidents are scheduled to hold talks on the latest political developments followed by a joint press conference.

Before heading to Bethlehem Biden met with the Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid where they both signed the so-called “Jerusalem Declaration” in which the US vowed to use “all elements in its national power” to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

Prior to his visit dozens of Palestinian activists protested in Bethlehem against Biden’s visit amid large PA forces’ presence.

Commenting on Biden’s visit the journalist Iyad Hamad said that Biden is not welcome in Palestine as he is completely biased to Israel and the journalist Shireen Abu Akleh’s killers.

For his part the member of the Factional Coordination Committee Bahaa Muhammad condemned Biden’s visit to Bethlehem “as it brings nothing but illusions to Palestinians.”

Another member of the Committee in Bethlehem Abu Amer Rahal said that economic solutions do not meet the minimum level of Palestinian rights foremost of which is the right of return.

For his part Director of the Independent Commission for Human Rights Farid al-Atrash said that the Palestinian people do not expect anything from Biden’s visit and will continue their struggle.

Earlier Friday dozens of Palestinian activists gathered near Al-Mutlaa Hospital in the Al-Tur town in Occupied Jerusalem in protest against Biden’s visit and his pro-Israel bias.

The activists raised Palestinian flags and banners reading “Palestinian lives matter” and “Justice for Shireen.”
