Cairo doubts Abbas’s claims of Hamas attempt to assassinate him

Monday 16-July-2007

CAIRO (PIC)– A Reliable Egyptian official source has devalued the importance of the CD used by the PA as evidence proving Hamas’s alleged attempt to assassinate PA chief Mahmoud Abbas London-based Al-Hayat newspaper reported.

“The film shows a group of young men working in digging a tunnel and exposing their faces who looked happy with and proud of what they were doing to the camera and all dressed in Hamas uniform” the Egyptian source explained and rhetorically asked: “How could such a group plan to work on this matter without hiding their faces while they knew that they were being videotaped?!”

“We are not amateurs; this tape can only convince dummies” the source added not ruling out the assumption that the process of digging the tunnel as appeared in the film was directed against IOF troops.

He warned of the repercussions of such accusations against Hamas or any other faction of attempting to assassinate Abbas saying: “It is not a simple matter and it has bad reflections not only on the factions but also on the Palestinian arena; and it causes a hard-to-treat rift.”

In the same context A Palestinian source revealed to the newspaper that the head of the Egyptian security delegation Major Burhan Hammad asked a senior official in the Palestinian presidency two months ago when he was in Gaza to determine the location of the tunnel which appeared in the film and to determine whether it was set under or by Abbas’s motorcade etc. but he did not get any response or any concrete proofs authenticating the fabricated film from the PA presidency so far.
