Casualties during IOF quelling of march in al-Khalil

Friday 26-February-2021

Violent clashes erupted on Friday in al-Khalil after the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) quelled a march to commemorate the 27th anniversary of the Ibrahimi Mosque massacre.

Local sources reported that IOF suppressed the march that started in front of the Ali Baka Mosque in the city center to commemorate the massacre of the Ibrahimi Mosque and to condemn the measures and attacks of the IOF on the mosque.

The IOF soldiers fired sound bombs and tear gas canisters at the citizens and several citizens suffered breathing problems.

The marchers raised Palestinian flags and photos of the massacre in the mosque and of the martyrs who died in it and chanted slogans condemning the crimes of the IOF and settlers.

More than 60 Palestinians died in the massacre of the Ibrahimi Mosque back in 1994.

After the massacre the IOF closed the Ibrahimi Mosque and the Old City for six months under the pretext of investigating the crime and formed an investigation committee headed by the president of the Israeli Supreme Court Meir Shamgar.

The committee gave the occupation the right to sovereignty over about 60% of the mosque with the aim of Judaizing and seizing it and divided the mosque between Muslims and Jews.

It also recommended opening the mosque for 10 days per year for Muslims only and opening it for 10 other days for Jews only.
