Commission 302 to Defend Refugees Rights on Wednesday denounced UNRWA’s latest decision to lay off dozens of employees in the Gaza Strip.
About 1000 employees have been affected by UNRWA’s latest measures which include the immediate dismissal of 125 workers from the agency’s emergency program. Another 570 employees were notified that they would be hired only on a part-time basis while an additional 270 were told that their contracts would be terminated at the end of 2018.
Commission 302 in a statement called for a popular uprising in UNRWA’s five areas of operation against the recent measures.
Commission 302 called on the Arab League the Organization of Islamic Cooperation human rights organizations and countries hosting Palestinian refugees to immediately intervene and pressure UNRWA to reverse its decisions.
It also stressed the need for providing job security to Gaza employees and putting an end to the “humanitarian massacre” committed against them by the UN agency.
It pointed out that UNRWA’s mass job cuts serve the Israel-US “Deal of the Century” which is aimed at liquidating the Palestinian refugees’ cause and dropping their right of return.
