Detainee readmitted to hospital after grave health deterioration

Sunday 23-February-2020

Cancer-stricken detainee Muwafaq Arouk 77 has been readmitted to an Israeli hospital after his health condition seriously worsened the Palestinian Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs Commission said on Sunday.

The commission said that Arouk is suffering from multiple health complications including severe pains fever weight loss and inability to eat or drink.

Arouk is now under anesthesia taking only fluids and analgesics according to the commission.

Arouk was diagnosed with cancerous tumors in the liver and intestine in July 2019 but the Israel Prison Service delayed his transfer to the hospital for chemotherapy until November 2019 after his health condition had gravely deteriorated.

Earlier in February prisoner Arouk underwent major surgery for the removal of an intestinal tumor but he was returned to Ramla jail only two weeks later with no regard for his serious health condition.

Arouk a 77-year-old from the 1948 occupied territories has been in Israeli jail since 2003 serving 30 years. He is one of 10 detainees in Israeli jails suffering from different types of cancer.
