Sunday 11-July-2021

The Palestinian Commission of Detainees’ and Ex-Detainees’ Affairs has accused anew the Israeli prison service (IPS) of persisting in medically neglecting Palestinian prisoners in its jails and violating their rights enshrined in international treaties and charters.

In a statement the Commission pointed to some cases of prisoners with medical conditions including prisoner Nidhal Zalloum a 57-year-old from Ramallah who suffers from blood pressure diabetes and constant vertigo.

The Commission said that he is exposed to medical neglect and the Eshel prison administration is reluctantly and barely provides him with medication and medical treatment.

Zalloum is one of the longest-serving prisoners in Israeli jails where he spent about 32 years of his prison sentence that includes two life terms.

Another prisoner called Mohamed Ta’amra who is being held in Ramon jail also suffers from blood pressure high blood cholesterol and stomach acidity and needs swift medical care.

As for prisoner Fareij Abu Daher currently detained in Nafha jail he suffers from seizures and recently he had a head injury after he fell off his bed as a result of his medical condition.

The Commission held the Israeli prison service fully responsible for the medical neglect policy pursued in its jails against the Palestinian prisoners and appealed to the competent international organizations and the Red Cross to assume their responsibilities to the fullest towards the prisoners.

In a separate incident the Commission said that Israeli prison forces on Sunday assaulted Palestinian prisoners in section 2 of the Ramon jail.

According to the Commission forces from the Israeli prison service raided and searched cells in section 2 of the jail brutalized the detainees and transferred them to section 8 of the same facility.

The Commission affirmed that the forces wreaked havoc on the prisoners’ belongings and threw them out of the cells describing what happened as unjustified.
