EU: Demolition of Jubbet ad-Dib school unacceptable

Saturday 26-August-2017

The European Union condemned again the Israeli measures against Palestinian schools in the West Bank saying that the Israeli demolition policy is unacceptable.

The EU demanded Israel return the equipment it confiscated from an elementary school in the Palestinian village of Jubbet ad-Dib close to Bethlehem. The confiscation was carried out just one day before classes restarted following the summer vacation.

The spokesman of the EU in Palestine Shadi Othman said the demolition operations go in line with the Israeli settlement policy pursued in the West Bank.

Othman told Quds Press that “The EU expresses strong concern over the recent demolitions and confiscations of Palestinian school structures undertaken by Israel in Bedouin communities in the West Bank.”

Hebrew Maariv newspaper reported that the Belgian government had called on Israeli occupation authorities to pay compensations for the razed school which was built by Belgian funds in the village.

On Wednesday Israeli forces confiscated caravans owned by the school and were used as classrooms since Israeli authorities ban school construction in the area at the pretext of lacking building permits.

Palestinian activists along with organizations set up tents for the only 64 students of the school in a protest move at demolishing the educational facility and confiscating the classroom caravans.
