Wednesday 1-February-2017

The Egyptian authorities closed Wednesday morning the Rafah border crossing the only passageway to the outside world for the besieged Gaza Strip after a four-day exceptional opening.

Spokesman for the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing Wael Abu Omar affirmed that Egyptian authorities closed the border crossing early today adding that the gateway had been opened for four consecutive days allowing 6000 people to go through in both directions.

2624 passengers most of whom being humanitarian cases managed to leave the Strip during the four-day opening while 3095 others entered the besieged coastal enclave through the crossing he added.

Egyptian authorities however turned back 203 passengers and did not allow them to pass from Gaza into Egypt for unknown reasons he continued.

Rafah crossing initially opened on Saturday for three days but Egyptian authorities decided on Monday to extend its opening for one day.

Prior to the four-day opening the crossing had been closed for 40 consecutive days.
