CAIRO (PIC)– Egypt has proposed the formation of a joint Hamas-Fatah committee to supervise the Gaza reconstruction in preparation for the formation of a national unity government.
Reuters quoted Palestinian sources on Saturday as saying that both movements have agreed on resuming meetings in a bid to overcome obstacles impeding internal Palestinian reconciliation.
The sources said that Cairo was trying to break the deadlock in the inter-Palestinian talks through asking the two main movements to cooperate in reconstructing the Strip as a preliminary step.
The Egyptian plan stipulates that the committee would be responsible before Mahmoud Abbas the former PA chief while Salam Fayyad the premier of the illegitimate PA government would supervise the reconstruction process.
Nabil Shaath one of the Fatah leaders and a prominent aide to Abbas said that the Egyptian leadership had handed Abbas a written proposal during his visit to Cairo this week. He added that Abbas would probably respond to the proposal before the new round of inter-Palestinian talks scheduled for 26/4 in Cairo.
