Egypt to extend Rafah crossing opening

Saturday 22-October-2016

Egyptian authorities decided to extend the opening of the Rafah border crossing with the Gaza Strip in both directions for one day on Sunday.

The border authority committee in the Gaza Strip reported that Egyptian authorities informed the committee that the border crossing would open again on Sunday.

The committee pointed out that nine buses have been allowed to pass through the border crossing on Saturday before its closure.

One of the buses was carrying holders of Egyptian passports while five others were carrying passengers who coordinated their departure with the Egyptian authorities.

Meanwhile a bus carrying stranded Palestinians arrived into Gaza Strip.

Earlier on Friday 660 Palestinians left Gaza while 107 Palestinians arrived into the Strip. 39 Passengers’ travel was denied.

The committee reported that 230 Palestinians were denied travel via Rafah crossing over the past five days of its opening for unknown reasons.

Egypt has upheld an Israeli military blockade on the Gaza Strip for the majority of the past three years since the ousting of former President Muhammad Morsi in 2013 and the rise to power of President Abd al-Fattah al-Sisi in Egypt.
