Egyptian mediation calms down inter-Palestinian clashes

Wednesday 20-December-2006

GAZA (PIC)– The Egyptian security delegation having permanent presence in Gaza succeeded Tuesday night in mediating an agreement along with commanders of PA security apparatuses and interior minister Sa’eed Siyam on halting inter-Palestinian clashes.

The agreement that went into effect on 1100 pm Tuesday stipulated withdrawing all armed elements from the Gaza streets along with all forms of armed demonstrations.

The agreement further stipulated that internal security men would take over responsibility of security in the Palestinian street while the interior ministry’s’ back-up force would return to previous deployment positions and that all barriers would be lifted from the streets.

A joint operations room would be formed out of representatives of national security interior ministry and intelligence to follow up implementation of the agreement as called for by PA premier Ismail Haneyya in his speech earlier Tuesday evening.

Furthermore a neutral investigative committee would be formed to probe the events that took place since the Rafah terminal incident in which armed men attempted to assassinate Haneyya on returning from a trip abroad.
