RAMALLAH (PIC)– Palestinian sources revealed that the Fayyad government in the West Bank plans to lay off thousands of West Bank government employees under the pretext of financial difficulties facing the PA in 2012.
The sources said according to al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper that the plan which was prepared by Fayyad and which is being secretly studied will mean that government civilian employees except those working in the education and medical sectors who spent more than 15 years in service will be forced to take early retirement.
The plan will also ask the PA President Mahmoud Abbas to implement the same regarding employees in the security apparatuses.
According to the plan all employees who fulfil the provisions of the 2005 retirement law and its amendments who completed 15 years of service will be transferred to early retirement with a retirement salary no less than 50% of the average salary over the last three years of service.
Well-informed Palestinian sources told al-Quds al-Arabi that the number of those affected by this decision is expected to reach 26300 government employees most of them were employed during the rule of former PA President Yasser Arafat and during the establishment of the PA after the Oslo accords.
