Five Palestinian female prisoners tested positive for COVID-19

Thursday 13-January-2022

The head of the Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Authority Major General Qadri Abu Bakr held on Thursday the Israeli prison authorities responsible for the life of Palestinian female prisoners after five of them tested positive for COVID-19.

Abu Baker pointed out to the spread of the coronavirus in the Israeli prisons amid total disregard on the part of the Israeli authorities.

He further called for the formation of a Palestinian and international medical committee to follow up the prisoners’ health situation especially those who suffer difficult health problems.

The Israeli authorities had closed Damon prison moving all the 33 female prisoners to the quarantine further exacerbating their difficult detention conditions.

For his part head of the Prisoners Center for Studies Raafat Hamdouna stressed the urgent need to follow up the health situation of the infected female prisoners.

Hamdouna further called on the Palestinian Arab and international humanitarian and human rights institutions to pressure the Israeli authorities to save the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons amid a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The total number of infections among Palestinian inmates has risen to 388 since April 2021.
