Full lockdown in West Bank to confront coronavirus

A full lockdown has taken place in the West Bank since Friday morning for 48 hours to reduce the spread of the coronavirus according to the decision of the Palestinian Authority government.

Ghassan Nimer the spokesman for the PA Interior Ministry said that the lockdown will continue until Sunday morning as part of the government’s plan to confront the coronavirus after recording the highest infection rates among citizens during the current week.

Nimr explained that the lockdown includes all aspects of life and only bakeries and pharmacies will be allowed to open. Movement in the streets will be prohibited unless absolutely necessary. Patrols of the security services will take place in the streets of cities in addition to placing barriers at the entrances to some cities.

He called on citizens to abide by the lockdown decision to prevent the spread of the virus explaining that there are a series of punitive measures that have been approved for violators shops institutions and vehicles if they do not adhere to instructions approved by the government the competent authorities and the Supreme Emergency Committee.

Mai Al-Kailah the Palestinian Minister of Health announced on Thursday that 18 deaths and 1906 cases of the coronavirus have been recorded. This is the highest number recorded in the Occupied West Bank Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Kailah stated in the brief report on the coronavirus for the last 24 hours that three deaths were recorded in Jerusalem 9 in the West Bank and 6 in the Gaza Strip.

She indicated that 140 new cases of coronavirus were recorded in occupied Jerusalem 1110 infections in the West Bank and 656 cases in the Gaza Strip.
