Gaza: $479 million losses due to recent Israeli aggression

Naji Sarhan the Undersecretary of the Palestinian Ministry of Public Works and Housing said on Monday that the total losses and damages in the Gaza Strip as a result of the latest Israeli aggression amounted to $479 million.

Sarhan added during a press conference that the government teams worked on recording damages according to an approved plan and work policies approved by the World Bank. The damages were limited to three main parts direct damages direct losses and indirect losses.

He pointed out that the total losses were distributed over three sectors; the housing and infrastructure sector reached 61% while the economic development sector amounted to 33% and the social development sector was 7%.

The Chairman of the Higher Governmental Committee for the Reconstruction of Gaza thanked the World Bank the United Nations and the European Union for completing the initial rapid assessment report on the damages of the aggression and the needs in the Gaza Strip.

He stressed that the committee seeks the participation of all parties in the besieged enclave in the plan for the reconstruction and development.

“The biggest challenge required from the international community is to stop the repeated Israeli attacks on Gaza and provide adequate funding to enable its people to live a decent life in peace” the chairman added.

In the report the committee published its vision for the reconstruction of Gaza which includes the full opening of the crossings the entry of construction materials and the rejection of the reconstruction mechanism that was implemented after the Israeli attack in summer 2014.
