Gaza: Lives of 425 kidney patients at risk

Tuesday 25-September-2018

The lives of 425 Palestinian kidney patients including children in the besieged Gaza Strip have become at great risk due to the lack of vital medications and the repeated power outages.

Doctor Abdullah al-Qishawi head of the kidney department at ash-Shifa Hospital said that the failure to provide those kidney patients with their medicines would seriously affect their health and threaten their lives.

Qishawi stated that 54 of these patients who already started to take medication ahead of scheduled kidney transplant surgeries would suffer life-threatening complications because the medicines they need almost ran out.

He also pointed out that the frequent power blackouts in Gaza would affect the performance of the kidney dialysis machines in the hospital and lead to medical equipment malfunctions which are difficult to repair due to the need for spare parts not available in the beleaguered Strip.
