Gaza fishermen demand end to Israel’s maritime blockade

Sunday 26-November-2017

Dozens of Palestinian fishermen in Gaza participated in a protest sit-in on Saturday to demand Israel to lift its maritime blockade on the impoverished enclave.

Some of the placards held by participants read “Freedom of fishing is our right” and “Where is the international community?”

Addressing the protesters chief of Gaza fishermen Nizar Ayyash accused the Israeli navy of harassing and committing crimes against the Palestinian fishermen.

“The fishermen want to be allowed to sail and fish without any assault by the Israel naval forces” Ayyash said.

He highlighted that the Israeli navy had killed since the beginning of the current year two fishermen wounded five arrested 27 others and seized 37 fishing boats.

He called on the Palestinian government to intervene and pressure Israel to expand the fishing zone from six and nine nautical miles to 20 affirming that the current fishing limits are not sufficient.
