Gaza square named after Tunisian martyr

Tuesday 7-February-2017

The Deir al-Balah municipality in the blockaded Gaza Strip on Monday named an open area after the slain Tunisian engineer Mohamed al-Zouari.

Dozens of civilians activists politicians and civil society representatives attended the inauguration ceremony.

Deir al-Balah mayor Sa’id Nassar said the decision to rename the square aims to pay tribute to the Tunisian engineer Mohamed al-Zouari who was assassinated by the Israeli Mossad in his hometown—Sfax—on December 15 2016.

“The Tunisian people has always been and will forever remain by the side of the Palestinian people” said the mayor.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony activist Mohamed al-Hatou also said: “Al-Zouari is a descendant of Ukba Ibn Nafi al-Fihri one of the Companions of Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). He is a source of pride for the entire nation thanks to his involvement in the anti-occupation struggle.”

Tunisian scientist al-Zouari assisted the drone program of Hamas’s armed wing—the Qassam Brigades—during Israel’s offensive on the besieged coastal enclave of Gaza in the summer of 2014.
