Gazans on tenterhooks as reconciliation talks kick-start in Cairo

Tuesday 10-October-2017

As talks to shore up national reconciliation have been on the move the Palestinians have been quite eager to reap the harvest of the unity initiative after Hamas made the first steps to that very end.

A few weeks after Hamas announced its decision to disband the administrative committee running Gaza’s home affairs the Palestinian Prime Minister popped in the besieged enclave in the first such move in three years.

Two such visits were carried out following the Cairo-brokered Shati Agreement between Hamas and Fatah in Gaza in April 2014.

Divisions between the two factions started to emerge on the surface after the Fatah-affiliated Palestinian Authority chaired by Mahmoud Abbas failed to implement the terms of the 2014 reconciliation deal freezing talks between both parties.

The Palestinians in the blockaded Gaza Strip where socio-economic conditions have been calamitous as a result of the blockade and the Israeli wars on the enclave have been on tenterhooks in anticipation of the off-shoots of the underway reconciliation talks in Cairo.
