NAZARETH (PIC)– Israeli workers under the Histadrut (syndicate of Israeli workers) went on a general strike Wednesday over the inability of Israeli premier Ehud Olmert’s government to pay their back wages.
The Histadrut announced the general strike after last-ditch negotiations with the government to pay the unpaid salaries failed in averting the planned comprehensive strike.
Since its defeat in the war it waged on Lebanon last summer Olmert’s government faced a series of scandals involving a number of Israeli officials including Israeli president Moshe Katsav former justice minister Haim Ramon and Olmert himself.
Since then popularity of Olmert and his Kadima party sharply plunged leaving him with only 2% of Israelis believing in his leadership.
