German parliament recognizes Israel as Jewish state

Friday 27-April-2018

The German Bundestag (parliament) has passed legislation that recognizes Israel an occupying power as a Jewish state and describes it as democratic.

The legislation adopted on Thursday states that the two- state solution is the only answer to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and that Israel’s security and sovereignty is a key part of Germany’s foreign and security policy.

Three right-wing parliamentary blocs the Christian and Democratic Union led by Chancellor Angela Merkel the Socialist Party and the Free Democratic Party submitted a draft bill in this regard to please Israel on its 70th founding anniversary.

Their draft bill also says that the German government and its partners in the international community should work towards a two-state solution which it described as “the only solution to the conflict in the Middle East with emphasis on the Jewishness democracy and independence of Israel as well as the establishment of a Palestinian viable and democratic state.”
