Guatemalan foreign minister Sandra Jovel on Friday affirmed that Guatemala’s decision to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is irreversible and called for respecting her country’s decisions.
Jovel said in press statements during a ceremony commemorating the end of Guatemala’s civil war in 1996 “It is a decision that has been made and it is not going to be reversed. The Guatemalan government is very respectful of the positions taken by other countries and we believe that others should respect the decisions made by Guatemala.”
On 26th December Guatemala announced that its decision to follow the US in moving its embassy to Jerusalem is a “sovereign matter” that should not affect its relations with any other country.
Guatemala’s president Jimmy Morales declared that his country is the first to follow the US Jerusalem move.
Morales stated on his Facebook page after speaking with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he had instructed the Foreign Ministry to initiate the necessary arrangements to move the Guatemalan embassy to Jerusalem.
