The Constitutional Court of Guatemala froze president Jimmy Morales’s decision to move his country’s embassy to Occupied Jerusalem according to the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).
In a statement the PLO’s Expatriate Affairs Department said the court’s verdict came after a lawsuit was filed by a group of Guatemalan jurists.
“The lawsuit was filed pursuant to the constitution of the country which is a secular state so the president has no right to take decisions related to religion and against the constitution” the statement said.
On December 6 2017 US president Donald Trump issued an edict recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and gave directives to initiate arrangements for the transfer of the US embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.
Later in the same month president Morales decided to follow suit and declared his intent to move his country’s embassy to Jerusalem.
