The situation in Aleppo is heartbreaking political bureau member of Hamas Khaled Mishaal told al-Jazeera on Thursday.
Speaking with al-Jazeera Hamas Chief Khaled Mishaal condemned the bloodshed and deadly warfare rocking the beleaguered Syrian territory.
Mishaal said that since the outburst of hostilities in Syria Hamas had tried its best to alleviate the simmering tension and find non-violent solutions to the conflict.
“Hamas had lived in Syria for over 11 years. . . . However when attempts to drag the group into the conflict started to emerge on the ground we decided to leave the Syrian territory for fear of being used as a cover to shed more Syrian blood” Mishaal stated.
Commenting on the group’s ties with Iran Mishaal said Hamas seeks to strike balanced and fruitful ties with all parties in the region in favor of the national liberation struggle.
According to Mishaal ever since its founding some 30 years ago Hamas has sought ways to boost its resistance arsenal.
“Hamas strongly believes in the imperative to liberate every single inch of Palestine and that armed resistance is the only way to oust the Israeli colonizers and liberate Palestine and the holy al-Aqsa Mosque” he added.
In Mishaal’s terms Hamas ties with the Muslim Brotherhood do not necessarily imply that the groups’ fates are inescapably shaped by the same doctrines and aims.
“Since its inception Hamas has been a national movement and an independent Palestinian organization with an Islamic agenda aiming to fight the Israeli colonization project” he further explained.
