Hamas-Fatah truce agreement does not materialize

Monday 14-May-2007

GAZA (PIC)– The Hamas and Fatah movements’ agreement at a late hour Sunday to halt all armed confrontations and to withdraw armed elements from the streets apparently did not materialize as roadblocks and sounds of gunfire are still heard in deferent areas of the Gaza Strip on Monday morning.

A meeting between leaders of both movements was organized late Sunday night under patronage of the Egyptian security delegation residing in Gaza to discuss the deteriorating security conditions in the Strip.

They decided to withdraw armed elements and to end all violent acts in addition to removing barricades from the streets and releasing kidnapped persons.

They also said that all accused elements in the violence should be prosecuted.

Hamas earlier Sunday held Fatah responsible for the security mess in Gaza after allowing its armed elements to wreak havoc without any restrictions.

The Movement asked PA chief Mahmoud Ababs who is also the Fatah leader to immediately intervene and stop this “farce”. It also asked all rational figures in the country to step in before it was too late to stop such unwarranted attacks.

The acts of violence were sparked by the murder of an activist affiliated with the AMB the armed wing of Fatah field commander in Beit Lahia north of the Strip at the hands of unknown elements. Fatah was quick to charge Hamas with the crime an allegation which Hamas categorically denied.
