Hamas asks Egypt to free Palestinian detainees in its jails

Monday 30-April-2007

GAZA (PIC)– The Hamas Movement on Monday stressed that the issue of the Palestinian detainees in Egyptian jails should be solved through dialogue and understanding with the “brothers in Egypt”.

A Hamas statement said that a meeting was held a couple of days ago between Khaled Mishaal the Hamas political bureau chairman and Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Suleiman during which the issue was raised.

It explained that the Egyptian government promised to solve the issue within the coming two months and added that the issue is always present in the meetings between the Hamas leadership in the Gaza Strip and the Egyptian ambassador and other officials.

The Movement expressed absolute rejection of what happened at the Egyptian embassy in Gaza where relatives of those detainees assaulted the building after staging a sit-in before it. “Such a behaviour is rejected on our part with all due respect to the feelings of the relatives and their concern for their sons’ lives” Hamas asserted.

It called on those relatives to be patient and give more chance to efforts exerted by Hamas with the Egyptians to settle this problem “which we hope will end soon with the release of their sons”.

Hamas also asked the Egyptian government to appreciate feelings of those relatives and their concern over the lives of their sons and expedite their release and hailed in this regard Egypt’s role in mediating a prisoners’ exchange deal with Israel and praised Cairo for its constant support for the Palestinian people throughout all stages.
