Hamas asks for Jordanian clarification over monarch’s statement

Saturday 21-April-2007

GAZA (PIC)– The Hamas Movement on Saturday asked the Jordanian government to clarify the statement attributed to King Abdullah II on the Palestinian refugees’ right of return (RoR) and on the common enemy in view of its “seriousness”.

The King was quoted as saying during a meeting with a visiting Israeli parliament delegation that RoR could be dropped in return for financial compensations and said that Jordan and Israel have common enemies including Hamas.

“We in Hamas would like to affirm that the RoR is a sacred right that none had the authority to relinquish especially when international resolutions sanctioned it alongside the compensations” the Movement’s statement underlined.

It asserted that the common enemy of the Arabs and Muslims “is the usurping colonialist Zionist entity that is occupying our lands and holy shrines and we must all unite in confronting it”.

For its part the Islamic Jihad Movement charged that king Abdullah’s statement only served Israel and its allies in the region.

“The right of return is a legal and inalienable human right which cannot be bartered”
Muhammad Al-Harrazin a Jihad leader in Gaza said in a press statement.

Harrazin stated that such statements “do not serve the Palestinian cause at all but they are in favor of the Palestinian people’s enemy and serve the Zionist plots and Israel’s allies in the region”.

He emphasized that the inability to recover the rights “does not mean surrendering them” calling upon the Palestinian government and presidency to denounce these statements “that deny the right of return for millions of displaced refugees.”
