Hamas condemns Israel’s systematic detention of lawmakers

Wednesday 25-January-2012

DAMASCUS (PIC)– Hamas Movement strongly denounced on Tuesday the systematic campaign of kidnapping and administrative detention used by Israel against Palestinian lawmakers.

In a press release Hamas said this campaign is aimed at curtailing its responsibilities as an elected national movement and undermining any chance to achieve the Palestinian reconciliation and reactivate the role of the legislative council.

It added that the Israeli occupation would gain nothing from its malicious plans but more disappointment and failure.

Hamas made its remarks in response to the Israeli decision to administratively detain legislative council speaker Aziz Dweik and the recent kidnapping of a number of other lawmakers.

For his part first deputy speaker of the Palestinian legislative council Ahmed Bahr called on the world’s parliaments to hold urgent sessions to address the issue of kidnapping Palestinian lawmakers.

Bahr made his remarks during a protest held on Tuesday outside the legislative council in Gaza against Israel’s systematic policy of kidnapping Palestinian lawmakers.

The deputy speaker stated that the recent kidnapping of MP Mohamed Totah and former minister Khaled Abu Arafa from their sit-in tent in occupied Jerusalem was a political crime and a violation of international law.

“The kidnapping of legitimate representatives is an assault on the Palestinian people and all Arabs and such thing will only strengthen our determination will and fortitude” Bahr emphasized.
